theMUSIC

To scene kids, music is everything, other than myspace and the vitals ;P
While most cults have restricted music genres, scene kids listen to whatever floats their boat, but tend to prefer punk, pop rock/pop punk and hardcore. A few other favourites are electro/techno, synth pop, alternative indie rock, trance, glamour rock, new wave, dance, synth-pop, rapcore, happy hardcore, grindcore, deathcore, riotgrrrl, heavy metal, screemo, ska, alternative hip-hop and a lil' bit of older music from the 70's/80's. Now thats a ton of music, but guess what? There's even more...you gotta discover your own music scene =]
It really depends on the individual's choice.
Having a ton of different genres on your iPod is always cool ;]
It's also a good idea to get familiar with your local bands before they get famous. Scene kids actually listen to a ton underground artists. Don't be afraid to ask your friends what they listen, sharing playlists is great way to discover music.
Knowing your music and their artists is important, you don't want end up at a concert where you don't know the lyrics or say you know a band and then have no idea what to say when they ask about the lead singer. Scene kids that don't listen to music or pretend they know a band are called posers.

A few of the most popular bands include:

theHAIR

Scene hair isn't the easiest to "create" and manage, but if you're up to it, thats great (: at the bottom of this page we've added a bunch of tips to care for your haair, cuz we all know that damaged haair is ugh-ly. So here's a list of traits you see in generic scene hair, 'couurse we suggest demand you to add your own touch to it & warp it to look "YOU", 'cuz looking like the rest, is SO not scene. Say no to clones (:
  • Sidebangs or Regular Bangs Covering One or Both Eyes;
  • Choppy/Razored Layers;
  • Usually Black or Platinum Blonde [although colors like light brown, red & even crazy colors are arouund, they are kinda more original];
  • Pin Straight [But Scene kids are starting to curl their hair now, just to fit OUT]
  • Teased w/ Tons of Hairspraay;
  • Heavily Inspired by Emo Hair;
  • Streaks OR extensions of unnatural colors [pink, teal, purple, red, etc.] are VERY popular and add a personal touch, some girls even have 'coontails [racoon stripes] or zebra/leopard print - the possibilties are endless;
  • Many scene kids use full-hair, clip-in extensions make their look longer or thicker.
  • Often accessorized with cute bows, barettes & sometimes hippy-headbands;
Always try to discover your own style to stand out - that's the real way to "be" scene, be yourself. Most scene queens out there are famous because they are ORIGINAL & make their own trends. REAL scene kids start trends- not follow them (:

Styling Scene Hair
If you want to start teasing your hair, you're gonna have to get layers, prefferably choppy as a mo`fukkah ;] Once thats done, you're ready to go. All you need is:
  • Comb [There are special teasing combs which work even better]
  • HAIRSPRAY [BedHead or Rave is a favorite and work the best]
  • Straightner
  1. Straighten your hair. Make sure you include your layers to make teasing your hair easier.
  2. Section your hair into manageable pieces. Clip your hair back into manageable chunks similar to sectioning it for blowdrying.
  3. Take the first section near to your crown and tease it. Backcomb the hair section from the tip to the root of the hair.
  4. Seal the teased section with hairspray. Spray your hair after every section to stop it falling down while you tease the rest.
  5. Repeat the teasing and hairspraying for the other sections.Continue to tease and hairspray the other sections of your hair.
  6. Lightly brush the highest layers. Brush the top layer of teased hair gently to prevent your hair looking ratty. You can also take this oppurtunity to adjust pieces of your hair and perfect it.
  7. Hold the hair with more hairspray. Spray the hair with more hairspray to hold it and finish it off.
---Warning: Do not tease your hair way too much or it can cause premature thinning and damage it.

How do you tease hair? You point and laugh at it. [Who can resist a good joke?] (:

And yeaah, Videos ALWAYS explain better. Here's a tutorial by Alyssa Abscission, there's lots of vids on youtube but this one wouuld be the easiest to follow, so yeaah.

Hair-care Tips for Scene Kids:
  • You'll be straightening your hair often, always make sure you use a heat protective spray before straightening.
  • Condition your hair every other day to retain its moisture.
  • Also use a shampoo for dry/damaged hair for extra care.
  • Always un-knot your hair before teasing, this saving your hair from extra-damaging
  • Do not over-do the teasing
  • Trim your hair at least half-an-inch every month or two to remove ugly split-ends, they intrude and slow down your hair growth
  • Tie your hair in a neat pony-tail before going to bed, these reduces knots
  • Using a hair-detangler eases knots, so you do not have to go hardcore with your hair-brush, which can sometimes damage your hair

  • Where to Buy Stuff:

    Hair Extension Streaks: It depends on the kind you want, synthetic or remi (human hair), We'd suggest human hair as you can straighten it, curl it, wash it, etc. Synthetic streaks get knotty really fast and it's uber hard to fix that, they also have a plasticy "barbie doll-like shine" but they cost $2.00-5.00. You can get them at Claire's, Hot Topic, Sally's and Wetseal. Now for human hair, they are expensive ($10.00-$20.00/2 streaks] but last forever and they look natural. Many DIY online stores sell these in super-rad designs like coontails, leopard print and more. Here's my fave stores: Strawberry Fizz Extensions, Fashionista, Candycanexoxo [If you have a store, let me know, I may add you (:]

    Hair Extensions [To make hair look longer]:Sally's Beauty Supply. 'Nuff said <33 These would cost you around $60-$200+ depending on the style, quality and brand. Hair extensions are also available in most local salons/hair-dressers.

    Hair Dye:
    Hot Topic has a bunch of diff brands w/ the crazy colors ;] Though expensive, Manic Panic would be one of the best companies and has a great selection of colors. Directions [UK based] is also very popular. If your looking for something natural try SFX, its got 28+ rad colors and lasts 3 to 6weeks- vegan & not tested on animals (:
    Accessories: For bows, cool hair-bands and other hair accessories, you can never go wrong with Claire's but Hot Topic is more like it ;] BlueBanana also looks great, but they only ship in the UK- so if you live there, you're a lucky betch!

    theMAKEUP

    Scene makeup is usually differs from person to person and what they can pull off. For scene kids, makeup is art and everybody has their own original way of "painting it". The classic look consists of:
    • Heavy eyeliner
    • Pale foundation
    • Black eyeshadow
    • Maybe a little colorful eyeshadow
    • Pale, clear or light pink lip-gloss
    • Fake eyelases or mascara
    Some kids prefer dramatic wings/cat eyes, some like black eyeshadow to intensify the look and some just prefer a thin lining around their eyes. The possibilities are innumerable. And as long as you apply some primer on before your make-up, your good to go [You don't wanna come back home and realize that your makeup totally smudged and you looked like a clown]

    Some kids go for even bolder, crazier looks, you'll often see scene kids bearing dazzling, bright colored eyeshadows in many artistic techniques- rainbow eyelids, bi-color shadows, etc. Some go to the extent of drawing stars, hearts, etc. near their eyes, which is pretty-ful.

    With Scene makeup, the focus is your usually the eyes...you want your eyes to stand out while the others are slightly toned down. Wearing a bright -red lipstick with your scene makeup, for example- can sometimes make your whole look seem over-done which isn't always nice, but if you can pull off bolder looks, experimenting is always welcome (:
    Also, make sure the kind of makeup you decide to start wearing suits you. You don't want to have people call you a poser.
    Always use primer on your eyelids and lower-lashline; This is to get rid of the chances of smudging disasters and other ugly situations. "Primer Potion" by Urban Decay works well. Use waterproof eye makeup  [mascara, eyeliner, etc.] for extra protection

    So how do you get the scene look?

    1. Wear a pale-ish foundation or powder
    2. Use primer [or a translucent powder] on your eyelids and near your lower lashline.
    3. Next, grab your kohl/pencil liner and color in your upper and lower water-line.
    4. Wipe off any access eyeliner, you don't want too much, you'll be wear liquid liner too.
    5. Apply black or colored eyeshadow on your eyelids. Put an appropriate amount according to look you are aiming for. If your using colored, you can also experiment with more than one color.
    6. Blend your eyeshadow with an eyeshadow brush or q-tip.
    7. Take your liquid liner and draw a smooth line across your upper and lower lashlines. If you wish, wing it out to add a more exotic look. You can also draw a few stars, hearts or dots near your eyes on occassions.
    8. You are done with the eyes. Get some lipgloss, make sure it is not too bright. Nude, translucent and light pink are good colors. Gently kiss a tissue paper to remove any access gloss ;]
    This is just the classic look. Experimenting with different methods is the best thing you can do, as long as it look good.

    Remember to wash off your makeup with a good make-up remover before going to bed. Avoiding this can cause nasty zits- VERY UGH-LY! ;]

    Where to buy
    When it comes to makeup, you always want quality. MAC, Urban Decay and Too Faced are very popular with the best quality makeup you can find. All 3 are available at your local Sephora or online at their respective websites. Facefront Cosmetics and Medusa's Makeup don't have huge makeup lines but their eyeshadows are great and they have tons of awesome colors. All of the companies mentioned do not test on animals. Facefront is 100% vegan, although the other companies have vegan options.

    thePIERCINGS

    Piercing are another way to stand out of the crowd, but they are serious decision. You should only get a piercing because YOU want to, not because it's "cool" or your friends are pressurizing you to get one. Also remember that while body piercings are easy to hide with clothing, facial piercings are hard to cover and if you get one, you could be stuck with it for life. Some employers don't hire pierced staff, unless they can hide. This could make it hard for you to get a job. Make sure you research about the kind of piercing you want to have incase there's something important you need to know like the rejection rate, precautions, healing tips, etc.
    Common Piercings among Scene Kids
    Septum ring: A piercing that goes through the septum [the wall between your 2 nostrils]
    Snakebites: Lower-lip piercings on both sides
    Single Lip Piercing: Lower-lip piercing
    Monroe: Piercing on one side of your upper lip [where marilyn monroe had here mole]
    Hip Piercings: Surface piercing on near both hips.
    Nose piercing: Piercing on ONE side of your nose
    Belly Piercing: Navel Piercing

    It's usually a maxium of 3 facial piercings before people start to think you're crazy, although some people who can pull it off get more [like the girl in the pic]. You do not have to have piercings to be "scene". Its also a good idea to get permission from your parents for your piercing or you could get into some serious shit.
    Get your piercings done by a professional.
